While I believe that Terminator 4 belongs in the land of unnecessary sequels along with the upcoming 300 follow-up, You have to admit that McG is definately rounding up an impressive cast.

According to /film:

Christian Bale took to the defensive, insisting that he accepted the role as John Connor in Terminator Salvation: The Future Begins because it reinvents the series.

“What I saw with Terminator was what I saw with Batman Begins,” Bale told /Film at The Dark Knight junket.”

Furthermore, Helena Bonham Carter has been pinned for a “small but pivotal role.”

Repo! The Genetic Opera Trailer

The new Trailer for Repo! The Genetic Opera has hit the net.

This movie looks interesting to say the least. However, anything with Bill Mosely and Paul Sorvino in it is worth giving attention to, even if they have to share the screen with Paris Hilton.

Interestingly enough though, according to the films IMDB page,

Darren Lynn Bousman originally refused to hold an audition for Paris Hilton. He did not think she would be capable, and feared media backlash or accusations of stunt casting. When he finally caved in, Paris came to the audition dressed “perfectly for the part,” and “rocked” the sound booth audition. After he audition, he was convinced she should play the role.”

So who knows, maybe this will be Paris’ breakout performance. I’m sure a lot of people thought the same about Marky Mark when he left the funky bunch to pursue acting.

Richard Kelly’s The Box over a year away?!?!

richard kelly

We get this news via /film

“Richard Kelly’s new film The Box finished shooting four plus months ago, and the first test screening is supposedly later this week. So we can probably expect to see the movie in theaters in October, November or December, right? Wrong.

According to Collider, Warner Bros is planning a 2009 release for the Donnie Darko director’s ney’s w sci-fi film. Not only that, but the date they are eyeing is over a year away – September 11th 2009. Why are they interested in a date so far away? And why September 11th? Does the date have anything to do with the plot? Not that I’m aware of. Of course, everything could change if the test screening scores are through the roof.”

This does seem a bit strange. But if you think about it, Richard Kelly’s films haven’t exactly been huge box office successes. It’s not like he’s had any huge failures (at least not that I’m aware of), but his biggest hit was Donnie Darko which nobody had even heard of until it hit dvd. So my best guess is that Warner Bros wants to find an opening weekend with little competition, so they’re gonna sit back and see how things go. But what do I know, that’s just a guess.

Army of the Dead/My Name is Bruce updates

Shocktillyoudrop has a lots of good news to report today.

buce

STYD was able to talk to Dark Horse Comics founder Mike Richardson who said the upcoming Bruce Campbell Flick, My Name is Bruce, should be in theatres sometime in October.

“Some people maybe thought the film fell out or that there was something wrong with it,” Richardson says, touching on Bruce‘s slow journey getting before wide audiences. It was roughly a year ago that it screened to CineVegas film fest attendees. “We did our shoot, put it in the can and the studio that financed it liked it so much they gave us more money to do a second shoot. We beefed it up so it could go into the theaters.”

According to IMDB, the film is about B Movie Legend Bruce Campbell who is mistaken for his character Ash from the Evil Dead trilogy and forced to fight a real monster in a small town in Oregon.

I don’t know how wide of a release this movie will have, but more than likely, it will be pretty small. So if you want to see this movie, chances are you’re going to have to wait for the dvd. Also, they’re already planning a sequal!

enjoy the trailer here.

STYD also managed to speak with Zach Snyder about Army of the Dead.

In the hustle and bustle of Tuesday night’s Saturn Awards ceremony in Universal City, California, ShockTillYouDrop.com managed to squeeze a mini-update from Zack and Deborah Snyder (300) regarding Army of the Deadwhich the pair are producing.

With director Matthijs van Heijningen locked in place, Zack, who is busy in post-production on Watchmen, hopes shooting will begin, “Really soon. The studio [Warner Bros.] seems to love our director and love our script. The movie, for me, is all about spectacle and being crazy, so it’s just trying to find a balance with the studio.”

Deborah adds, “We’re hoping to start this fall.”

Written by Joby Harold (
interview), Army of the Dead is set in a quarantined Las Vegas in the not-too-distant future and focuses on a father who tries to save his daughter from imminent death in a zombie-infested world.

I hope that some of the visual masterpieces from 300 can carry over into this film. While I usually despise CGI in zombie flicks, I can give Mr. Snyder the benefit of the doubt with this one.

Marvel Sheds Some Light on Future Avengers Movie

Latino Review has gotten a hold some juicy info possibly revealing the complete line-up of the upcoming Avengers movie.

“Iron Man director Jon Favreau, who is developing a sequel to be released in April 2010, says Marvel’s plan is ‘to team up the heroes for The Avengers, which is made up of all of the Marvel heroes they have the rights to.’

And which characters do they have the rights to exactly?

Favreau says the team’s lineup has changed throughout the years, ‘but the ones Marvel is talking about now are Captain America, Hulk, Thor, Ant-Man and Iron Man. I would love to see that.”

Personally, I’m not very familiar at all with the comic book stories. However, I ABSOLUTELY LOVE WHAT MARVEL IS DOING RIGHT NOW!!!!.

Every other movie studio needs take note and learn a lesson from these guys. They already have an impressive, albeit short, track record with only two films under their belt. But if they can manage to continue making films of the same calibur as IRON MAN and THE INCREDIBLE HULK, they could easily become one of the top studios in the business (that is if they’re not already).

On a side note, Ant-Man is currently set to be directed by Edgar Wright, who has already become one of my favorite directors.

Tarantino gives us a little info on INGLORIOUS BASTARDS

Tarantino

BBC News has a nice little interview Quentin Tarantino where we learn a little about his upcoming two-part war epic, INGLORIOUS BASTARDS

“Tarantino, who was at an independent film festival in the US, confirmed he has now finished the screenplay for Inglorious Bastards – his long-awaited new film – and he maintains he is moving into pre-production right away

According to Tarantino no final decisions have yet been made about casting. But in the past a wide range of names from Tim Roth to Sylvester Stallone have been rumoured to be involved.

The film has been described as his version of the classic 1967 Second World War action movie The Dirty Dozen, starring Lee Marvin and Ernest Borgnine.

That film told the fictional story of a group of American soldiers convicted of various military crimes who were ordered to go on a suicide mission behind enemy lines to kill Nazi officers.

But Tarantino points out that the original picture was only a source of inspiration, nothing more. “

QT’s been making headlines quite a bit lately since he announced at this years Cannes Film Festival that he planned to have the film finished by this time next year, despite the fact that nobody has been casted yet. It may be a bit of a long shot, and many people seem to remain skeptical at the idea, but he certainly does seem to be determined to accomplish the feat.

Tarantino has yet to disappoint me with anything he’s done so far, and I have extremely high hopes for this film.

New Poster for Rob Zombie’s Tyrannosaurus Rex

Shocktillyoudrop has the new poster for the new upcoming Rob Zombie film.

Tyrannosaurus Rex

I have no idea what this film is about, and apparently, neither does anybody else. But if the movie is half as awesome as this poster, then I’m in! Rob Zombie has definately proven he make a good horror film with HOUSE OF 1000 CORPSES and THE DEVIL’S REJECTS, and while HALLOWEEN was a little disapointing, him directing an exploitation dinosaur movie with biker dudes, sleeveless jackets, hot chicks and guns has good news writtin all over it. I can’t wait to hear more about this film in the coming months.

Friday the 13th: The Consequences of Pre-Marital Sex

Sex and Friday the 13th has been discussed many times throughout the years, but I wanted to share some of my thoughts on the subject as well.

friday the 13th

It’s no secret that sex sells. These days, sex is exploited in each and every market imaginable, most notably, in the entertainment industry. But this somewhat newfound cash crop doesn’t come without conflicting arguments. Social standards may have changed with the times, but not everybody shares the same views. Many religious groups and ethical activists have boycotted plenty of films to prove just that. And of all the genres that become blacklisted as “obscene,” the horror genre is undoubtedly the most heavily criticized. Unfortunately however, many of these activists’ views are narrowed by apertures of negative stigmas and unfair generalizations. They tend to be too distracted by their convictions to look beyond the palpable overtones, see the true message that horror filmmakers are trying to tell us and to realize that some of the very films that they condemn actually support the beliefs that they so nobly stand by. For example, Friday the 13th, the story of a small group of horny teenage camp counselors being slaughtered one by one, is too often overlooked as one of the largest, and most influential anti-pre-marital sex campaigns of the 1980’s.

When one watches Friday the 13th, it is easy to forget who the real victim is amidst all of the chaos. The sad truth is that Jason Voorhees tragically drowned due to negligence caused by pre-marital sexual activities of the camp counselors who were responsible for him. Though we later find out that he miraculously survived, the result was an extreme case of hydrocephalus. Hydrocephalus is a term derived from the Greek words “hydro” meaning water, and “cephalus” meaning head. Sometimes known simply as “water in the brain,” people with this condition have an abnormal accumulation of  fluid inside the brain causing severe pressure inside the skull, enlargement of the head, and mental disability (hydroassoc.org). Therefore, lending some explanation to Jason’s future slayings, and giving us insight into the origin of his eventual homicidal behavior.

Ever since the emergence of sexually transmitted diseases, recreational sex has become a cautionary practice. As a result, many parents have used STDs as a tool to keep their children sexually abstinent in order to protect them, as well as to further impose the widely-accepted belief of saving sex for marriage. But director Sean S. Cunningham gave kids a new excuse to remain chaste. He took sexually transmitted diseases, and gave them a physical incarnation. He created something we could visualize as an enforcer of sexual abstinence, and he wastes no time by showing us this within the first few minutes of his film. In one particular scene, two unnamed counselors stray away from their peers and find a secluded cabin in which to fornicate. As the audience, we can see that they are extremely secretive about their actions, and at first glance one might think that they only seek privacy, as sex has been socially accepted as a private activity. But once an unseen assailant suddenly appears to the two young lovers, it quickly becomes apparent, due to their apologetic reaction, that they were more concerned with being reprimanded for their actions than being exposed in their most natural of states. Thus sending a subtle message of morality to the audience, revealing that they knew what they were doing was wrong, yet did it anyways. And like many sexually transmitted diseases, the end result can be fatal. Therefore these kids received their just deserts and paid the ultimate price, not only with their own lives, but with the life of the young Jason Voorhees, who supposedly drowned in Crystal Lake due to the fact that the only two people that could hear his cries for help were too busy being intimate to notice.

Hell hath no fury like a revenge seeking sociopathic mother such as Pamela Voorhees. While she may be the notorious slayer of adulterated teens, what people don’t realize is that Mrs. Voorhees is the cinematic representation of all the maternal figures of America. She has that warm, affectionate presence about her that makes seem harmless.  Both Annie and Alice, while oblivious to Mrs. Voorhees’s ulterior motives at the time, even felt a sense of safety and security when they first saw her. She has that soft, soothing voice that sings children to sleep. She carries with her a sense of trustworthiness and, most importantly, like all mothers, she is literally willing to do anything for her son’s well-being, even if it means murder.  And inside every soccer and PTA mom, every ethical activist on the picket lines, every outraged and overprotective mother, is a dormant Mrs. Voorhees just waiting to be unleashed. Like a volatile and unpredictable time bomb seconds away from a Hiroshima sized explosion, all these angry mothers in the world need in order to self-detonate is one little mishap to send them over the edge. Mix that with a subject as taboo as pre-marital sex, irrationality, a strict code of ethics, and the death of child due to the act of pre-marital sex, you have all the ingredients needed for a full-scale massacre, as well as a justifiable, and intimidating reason to remain sexually abstinent.

Today’s youth is more open about their sexuality than ever. While Friday the 13th as a film has easily withstood the test of time, remaining on of the most iconic films to date, its influence on our culture has slowly lost its impact over the years. Perhaps we’ve become jaded by the increasing amount of sex and violence both in films, and reality. Or maybe we’ve become a society more defined by self-accomplishment than moral standards. But whatever the reasons, the fact remains that its message of morality regarding sex will always exist. While some might disagree, there’s no escaping the fact that sex can just as easily destroy a life as it can create one.
